Bartolomé Deyá is dean of the Faculty of Tourism of the University of the Balearic Islands (UIB). Deyá is an expert on the subject which he teaches. He is aware of the constant evolution of one of the most important sources of income in the Balearic archipelago.
What is your opinion about tourism today?
Recently, a prominent personality, in the tourism industry worldwide, told me in a talk that he loved to travel to Majorca because, in his opinion, “here is breathed tourism at all times, in every corner, every moment”. And it is just that Balearic Islands is one of the main tourist destinations in the world.
So important is the academic training?
Undoubtedly, the good training of professionals is a key factor in a sector as competitive as the touristic. It is an essential requirement to ensure its continuity. For this reason, the Faculty of Tourism of the UIB has assumed a clear commitment to society: to make a firm commitment to excellence in training. The objective is to offer quality training that guarantees the sustainability of our economic and social model in the medium and long term.
How do you plan to get it?
In order to improve the language skills of our students and the international projection of our studies, we have set up a bilingual international group in which students receive most the subjects (about 80%) in Non-native languages (English, French or German).
Everybody speaks about ‘internationalization’…
Yes, it is important. We are committed to the internationalization of our studies. Each course, more than one hundred students from more than 25 different nationalities, attracted by our good position in the international university rankings, have decided to complete part of their studies in our classrooms…In them there is an enriching multicultural atmosphere.
